Al Khatim & Al Khaznah — our actual desert safari location
Natural, breathable fabrics are the clear winner in the desert heat. Cotton and linen both let air circulate and absorb sweat far better than synthetics like polyester, which trap heat against your skin. Loose-fitting cuts work better than tight ones, and light or neutral colours (sand, khaki, soft blues and greens) are more practical than very dark shades, which absorb heat, or pure white, which shows dust quickly. A lightweight kandura or loose abaya-style dress is genuinely comfortable in this climate if you want a more authentic look, though it is entirely optional — we provide Arabic costumes for photos, so your own clothing only needs to handle the activities.
Named & transparent
We tell you exactly where you are going — the Al Khatim and Al Khaznah desert, around 45 minutes from the city — not a vague “Arabian desert” with no real answer.
Close enough for any package
At under an hour from the city, Al Khatim and Al Khaznah work for a quick self-drive trip, a full evening safari, or even an overnight stay — without losing half your day to driving.
Quieter than Dubai, closer than Liwa
The sweet spot: genuine open dunes without Dubai-level crowds, and without the 2.5–3 hour drive a real Liwa expedition requires.

⭐ Desert safari locations near Abu Dhabi, at a glance
Not every desert safari listing tells you exactly where you are going — and that matters, because “the desert” covers a huge range of places, distances and experiences. Most Abu Dhabi desert safaris, including ours, run in the Al Khatim and Al Khaznah desert, a region of golden dunes roughly 80 km (45 minutes to an hour) east of the city. That is genuinely different from the Liwa Desert, home to the famous Moreeb Dune, which is around 250 km and 2.5 to 3 hours south — a separate trip entirely. It is also different again from the desert areas used for safaris in Dubai. This guide lays out exactly where Abu Dhabi desert safaris actually happen, how the main locations compare, and which one fits what you are looking for.
📍 Al Khatim & Al Khaznah — our actual desert safari location
The Al Khatim Desert is the closest major dune region to Abu Dhabi city, lying along the route toward Al Ain, roughly 80 km and a 45-minute to one-hour drive away. It is known for wide, rolling golden dunes shaped by seasonal winds, and it is the standard location named by most licensed Abu Dhabi operators for morning, evening and overnight safaris. The neighbouring Al Khaznah desert sits a little further along the same corridor and has a reputation for being quieter and less crowded, with a more authentic feel. Our own safaris run across both — close enough to the city for an easy half-day or evening trip, yet far enough to feel like genuine open desert.
🔍 How operators choose & name their desert safari location
Some desert safari pages are vague about exactly where you will be taken — they describe “the Arabian desert” or “golden dunes” without naming a specific place. In practice, the vast majority of standard Abu Dhabi tours operate in the same general Al Khatim and Al Khaznah corridor, because it is close enough to the city for a half-day or evening trip while still offering proper open dunes. We name our location plainly on every page, so you know in advance roughly how long the drive will be and what kind of terrain to expect — rather than discovering it for the first time in the vehicle.
🏜️ Liwa Desert & Moreeb Dune — the locations we do not visit on a standard safari
The Liwa Desert sits in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi, on the edge of the Empty Quarter (Rub’ al Khali), roughly 250 km and 2.5 to 3 hours south of the city — a different scale of trip entirely. Liwa is famous for Moreeb Dune (also called Tal Moreeb), one of the tallest sand dunes in the world at around 300 metres with a steep 50-degree slip face, best known for the annual Liwa Moreeb Dune Festival hill-climb. It is genuinely spectacular, but it is not part of a standard Abu Dhabi desert safari — the distance alone makes it a separate, dedicated trip. If a tour promises Liwa-style mega-dunes as part of a short evening safari from the city, the maths simply does not add up; be sure to check the actual location before booking.
🌌 Al Quaa, Al Wathba & Fossil Dunes — our other featured Abu Dhabi locations
Beyond our standard Al Khatim and Al Khaznah safaris, the wider Abu Dhabi desert region has several other genuinely worthwhile spots we cover in detail elsewhere. Al Quaa, further south past Al Ain toward the Saudi border, is widely regarded as the darkest sky and best stargazing spot in the UAE — see our full Al Quaa Milky Way Spot guide. Al Wathba Salt Lake, south-east of the city, is a striking natural emerald-green lake with white salt formations, covered in our Al Wathba guide. The nearby Wathba Fossil Dunes are wind-carved rock formations, covered in our Fossil Dunes guide. None of these are where our standard dune-bashing safari runs, but we can help you combine a visit to any of them with a desert safari.
🏙️ How Abu Dhabi locations compare to Dubai
Dubai’s desert safaris mainly operate in areas like Lahbab (known for red dunes), Al Awir and the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve, all roughly 35 to 45 km from Downtown Dubai. These areas see an enormous volume of visitors every evening, which can mean crowded car parks, busy dune-bashing convoys and packed camps. Abu Dhabi’s Al Khatim and Al Khaznah desert sees noticeably less traffic by comparison — a quieter, more spacious experience with fewer vehicles sharing the same stretch of dunes. The terrain is broadly similar (golden erg dunes shaped by the same desert system), but the atmosphere is the main difference: Abu Dhabi trades a little big-city buzz for a calmer, more open desert evening.
⚖️ Al Khatim vs Liwa vs Dubai — which location fits you
If you want a comfortable half-day, evening or overnight trip with dune bashing, a camel ride, BBQ dinner and live shows, all within an hour of Abu Dhabi, Al Khatim and Al Khaznah is the right choice — it is exactly what our standard packages cover. If you specifically want to see the world-famous Moreeb Dune and the deep Empty Quarter, you are looking at a dedicated Liwa expedition, a longer and more involved trip that needs separate planning. If you are coming from Dubai and want the easiest, closest option without crossing emirates, Dubai’s own desert areas make sense — but if you are already in or visiting Abu Dhabi and want a quieter, less crowded dune-bashing experience, our local Al Khatim and Al Khaznah safari is the simplest and most authentic option.
📏 Distances at a glance — from Abu Dhabi city
To put the main locations side by side: Al Khatim and Al Khaznah are about 80 km and 45 minutes to an hour away, making them the easiest option for a half-day, evening or overnight trip. Al Wathba Salt Lake is closer still, about 45 minutes south-east. Al Quaa is considerably further, around 90 minutes to two hours south past Al Ain. Liwa and Moreeb Dune are the most remote at roughly 250 km and 2.5 to 3 hours south. Dubai’s desert areas are not relevant if you are departing from Abu Dhabi, since they sit in a different emirate entirely, roughly 1.5 hours from central Abu Dhabi before you even reach the dunes. Distance is one of the biggest factors in choosing the right desert experience for the time you have.
✅ How to verify a tour’s real location before you book
A few quick questions can save you a surprise on the day. Ask the operator to name the specific desert (not just “the Arabian desert”), and ask roughly how long the drive will take from your pickup point. If a short evening tour claims to include Liwa-style mega-dunes, treat that with caution, since the real Liwa region is hours away. We are upfront on every page: our standard safaris run in the Al Khatim and Al Khaznah desert, roughly 45 minutes to an hour from the city, and we are always happy to confirm pickup time and route on WhatsApp before you commit.
🏜️ Book a safari at our real, named location
Now that you know exactly where you are headed, booking is simple. Our desert safaris run in the Al Khatim and Al Khaznah desert, about 45 minutes to an hour from Abu Dhabi city, with self-drive and sharing options from AED 40 per person, or our most popular evening safari with dune bashing, a camel ride, BBQ dinner and live entertainment from AED 250. If you would also like to combine your trip with Al Quaa, Al Wathba Salt Lake or the Fossil Dunes, just mention it on WhatsApp and we can help you plan a fuller day. Choose your package and any extras in the builder below, send one message, and pay on arrival.
How Abu Dhabi locations compare to Dubai
Dubai’s desert safaris mainly run in areas like Lahbab and Al Marmoom, both around 35–45 km from Downtown Dubai, which see an enormous volume of visitors every evening. Abu Dhabi’s Al Khatim and Al Khaznah desert sees noticeably less traffic by comparison — broadly similar golden dune terrain, but a quieter, more spacious experience with far fewer vehicles sharing the same stretch of dunes for that classic dunes-at-sunset photo.
Beyond the city limits lies the Empty Quarter (Rub’ al Khali), home to the world’s tallest dunes including Moreeb Dune. It’s the same desert the Bedouin crossed for centuries — and it’s right on Abu Dhabi’s doorstep.

📷Desert Safari Location — FAQs
Most Abu Dhabi desert safaris, including ours, operate in the Al Khatim and Al Khaznah desert — golden dunes roughly 80 km (45 minutes to an hour) east of the city. This is the closest major dune region to Abu Dhabi and the standard location named by most licensed operators, though not every tour discloses it clearly.
The Al Khatim Desert is the closest major desert safari location, about 80 km from downtown Abu Dhabi via the E22 toward Al Ain, roughly a 45-minute to one-hour drive. It is the standard location for our morning, evening and overnight safaris.
They are neighbouring desert areas in the same general region east of Abu Dhabi. Al Khatim is the better-known name, while Al Khaznah is slightly further and known for a quieter, less crowded atmosphere. We run safaris across both.
No. Liwa is a separate, much more remote desert region roughly 250 km (about 2.5 to 3 hours) south of the city, on the edge of the Empty Quarter. Most standard desert safaris, including ours, do not travel as far as Liwa — they operate in the closer Al Khatim and Al Khaznah desert instead.
Moreeb Dune (Tal Moreeb) is in the Liwa Desert, about 250 km and 2.5 to 3 hours from Abu Dhabi city, and rises around 300 metres — among the tallest sand dunes in the world. It is not included in a standard Abu Dhabi desert safari; visiting it typically requires a dedicated, separately planned Liwa trip.
Some marketing pages describe a desert safari without naming the exact location, which makes it hard to know how far you will actually travel. We name our location plainly — the Al Khatim and Al Khaznah desert — on every page, so you know exactly where you are going before you book.
Yes. Dubai’s safaris mainly run in areas like Lahbab and Al Marmoom, which see very high visitor numbers and can feel crowded. Abu Dhabi’s Al Khatim and Al Khaznah desert is quieter, with far fewer vehicles and a more spacious, authentic dune-bashing experience.
For stargazing, Al Quaa further south has the darkest skies in the region. For unique photography, Al Wathba Salt Lake and the Fossil Dunes stand out. For a reliable, family-friendly dune-bashing and camp experience, Al Khatim and Al Khaznah are the easiest and most comfortable choice, closest to the city.
Our standard packages run in the Al Khatim and Al Khaznah desert. If you want to combine your trip with Al Quaa, Al Wathba Salt Lake or the Fossil Dunes, message us on WhatsApp and we can help you plan it alongside your safari.
Our desert safaris in the Al Khatim and Al Khaznah desert start from AED 40 per person self-drive, with sharing pickup from AED 60. The popular evening safari with dune bashing, a camel ride, BBQ dinner and live shows is AED 250 per person. Choose your package in the builder, send one WhatsApp message and pay on arrival.
