What you can do at an Al Quaa overnight safari
The UAE’s darkest sky — the real Milky Way spot near Abu Dhabi
Al Quaa sits deep in the southern Abu Dhabi desert, beyond Al Ain toward the Empty Quarter — roughly 90 minutes to two hours from the city. Its extreme distance from any town or street light makes it the lowest light-pollution spot in the UAE, which is why the Milky Way is visible here in stunning detail on a clear, moonless night.
The UAE’s darkest night sky
Some of the lowest light pollution in the country. On a clear new-moon night the Milky Way blazes from horizon to horizon in full detail — a view impossible from anywhere near the city lights.
Total silence & open horizons
Raw, untouched desert — no lights, no noise, no crowds. Wide sand plains and an unbroken horizon make the night sky feel vast and the stargazing unforgettable.
We handle the drive & the camp
Skip the 90-minute remote trip to a zero-facility site. Our overnight safari includes pickup, a Bedouin camp with washrooms, BBQ dinner, and hours of dark-sky stargazing — far more comfortable.

Al Quaa weather & temperature by season
Desert nights swing far more than desert days — even on a warm afternoon, temperatures at Al Quaa can drop sharply once the sun is down. Know what to expect before you pack.
| Season | Daytime Temp | Overnight Temp | Sky & Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter Dec – Feb | 22–26°C | 8–13°C | Cool, crisp, clearest skies — bring a proper jacket for after dark. Comfortable camping. |
| Spring Mar – Apr | 27–33°C | 14–19°C | Warm days, comfortably cool nights. Milky Way core rising well — one of the best windows. |
| Summer May – Sep | 38–45°C+ | 26–31°C | Hot even after dark and skies are hazier. The Milky Way core is highest and brightest, but comfort drops significantly. |
| Autumn Oct – Nov | 28–34°C | 15–20°C | Similar to spring as humidity drops. Excellent stargazing conditions return. |

📍 Al Quaa Milky Way Spot · 23.6046°N, 55.4583°E · ~90 min from Abu Dhabi city Open in Google Maps →
Head south via Al Ain (E30/E22)
Follow the highway south past Al Ain towards the Empty Quarter. Most of the drive is paved dual carriageway with good signage.
Leave the highway for the unnamed sandy track
Near the site the road becomes an unnamed sandy track off the main road — this is where a normal car can struggle in soft conditions. A 4×4 is recommended beyond this point.
Follow the Google Maps pin, not a fixed address
There is no street address. Search “Al Quaa Milky Way Spot” on Google Maps and follow the live pin, since multiple sandy tracks branch off nearby. Download offline maps because mobile signal is weak.
2026 meteor showers & stargazing events over Al Quaa
Beyond the Milky Way itself, these are the nights worth planning a trip around. Moon conditions matter as much as the shower — a bright moon can wash out all but the brightest meteors.
| Date (2026) | Event | Peak Rate | Moon Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan 3–4 | Quadrantids | ~120/hr | Pre-dawn hours best — waning moon interferes less after midnight |
| Apr 22–23 | Lyrids | ~18/hr | Waxing crescent sets early — dark skies for the peak |
| May 5–6 | Eta Aquariids | ~50/hr | Waning gibbous rises near midnight — best just after dusk |
| Aug 12–13⭐ Best of year | Perseids | ~100/hr | New moon — darkest possible skies all night. Plan this date months ahead. |
| Oct 8–9 | Draconids | ~10/hr | Best right after nightfall |
| Oct 21–22 | Orionids | ~20/hr | Some moonlight interference — still worth going |
| Nov 17 | Leonids | ~15/hr | Best after midnight; variable year-to-year intensity |
| Dec 13–14⭐ Strongest shower | Geminids | ~150/hr | Waxing crescent sets early — excellent dark-sky conditions |
| Dec 21–22 | Ursids | ~5–10/hr | Low-key close to the year — good for a quiet desert night |
Peak dates and rates are approximate — always confirm the moon phase before planning around a specific shower. ⭐ highlights = highest priority dates to book around.

Your stargazing night, step by step
From city pickup to dune bashing, BBQ dinner and the Milky Way — here is how an overnight stargazing safari in the Al Khatim desert flows.
Hotel or mall pickup
We collect you from your Abu Dhabi hotel or mall and drive out into the dunes — open desert away from the city lights, where the night sky turns dark and the stars come out.
Dune bashing in a Land Cruiser
An experienced driver powers the 4×4 up, over and down the steep golden dunes. It is a desert roller-coaster, and the safest way to ride the deep sand.
Sunset photo stop
Pause as the dunes turn gold — in traditional Arabic costume if you like. The sunset light over Al Khatim is spectacular.
BBQ dinner, sheesha & live shows
At the Bedouin camp, enjoy Arabic coffee, dates, BBQ buffet dinner and live Tanoura and belly dance entertainment.
Stargazing — the Milky Way
As midnight passes the galactic core climbs and the Milky Way becomes spectacular. The Al Khatim sky is well away from city light pollution — exactly what you came for.
Sunrise & breakfast, then back
Wake to a silent desert sunrise, enjoy breakfast, then we drive you back to your hotel. (Overnight package only.)
A sky with no city lights — the authentic Arabian desert night
Abu Dhabi’s desert sits just 45 minutes from the city, yet feels worlds away from the crowded Dubai dunes. Our safaris run in the Al Khatim and Al Khaznah desert — wide, rolling golden dunes with far fewer vehicles, so the dune bashing, sunset photography and camp experience feel genuinely private.
Beyond the city limits lies the Empty Quarter (Rub’ al Khali), home to the world’s tallest dunes including Moreeb Dune. It’s the same desert the Bedouin crossed for centuries — right on Abu Dhabi’s doorstep.

Al Quaa & the overnight stargazing safari — quick facts
Key facts for Al Quaa and for our guided overnight stargazing safari. The dunes are free to drive; a safari adds the vehicle, driver, pickup, camp, dune bashing, camel ride, sandboarding, BBQ dinner and live shows.
Landscape, heritage & wildlife
🏜️The desert landscape
The Al Quaa Milky Way spot lies in the open desert of the southern Abu Dhabi emirate, beyond Al Ain toward the Empty Quarter (Rub’ al Khali). The terrain is wide sand plains and rolling dunes shaped by seasonal shamal winds, with a warm ochre colour from iron-oxide in the sand that glows amber at sunset before the sky fills with stars. Our overnight safaris run in the Al Khatim and Al Khaznah dunes closer to the city, where clear winter nights drop to a comfortable 15°C — ideal for overnight camping and stargazing.
🏕️Bedouin heritage
This desert was the ancestral home of the Bedouin — nomadic Arab tribes who navigated these sands for centuries by the stars, travelling by camel. Modern desert camps honour that heritage: guests are welcomed with qahwa (Arabic coffee with cardamom), fresh dates and traditional majlis seating. Henna art, Arabic costumes and live Tanoura and belly-dance performances connect every safari to the living cultural heritage of the UAE.
🦅Desert wildlife & the Empty Quarter
The protected desert corridors of southern Abu Dhabi are home to the Arabian oryx — the UAE’s national animal — alongside sand gazelles and migrating houbara bustards. Further south, the Liwa region and the Empty Quarter hold the world’s tallest dunes, including Moreeb Dune at over 200 metres. Falcon photography, available as an add-on, lets guests pose with a trained falcon as part of the UAE’s UNESCO-recognised falconry tradition.
Stargazing then sunrise — the overnight desert experience
Both ends of the night are magic in the desert. Here is how to pick your moment.
Golden hour & the full evening
Ride as the dunes glow amber, carry on into an evening safari — BBQ dinner, belly dance, Tanoura and fire show. The warmest light and the liveliest camp. Best if you want the whole desert night.
The Milky Way at its strongest
The 10:30 pm–3:30 am window is when the galactic core is highest and the sky is darkest. For dedicated stargazing and Milky Way photography, staying overnight is the only way to hit this window without a 90-minute drive to Al Quaa.
Cool, quiet & peaceful
Set out in the cool early light when the desert is calm and almost empty. Softer colours, fewer people, and a serene experience — ideal for photographers and anyone who prefers stillness over a party.

Al Quaa Milky Way spot — FAQs
Al Quaa is a remote dark-sky desert in the southern Abu Dhabi emirate, beyond Al Ain toward the Empty Quarter and the Saudi border. With almost no light pollution it is widely called the UAE’s Milky Way spot. Search “Al Quaa Milky Way Spot” on Google Maps (approx 23.7392°N, 55.4783°E); the final approach is a sandy desert track off the main road.
Roughly 90 minutes to two hours’ drive from Abu Dhabi city, deep in the southern desert past Al Ain. Most of the route is paved highway with a short sandy stretch near the site. There are no street lights for the last part of the drive, which is exactly why the sky is so dark there.
For the main meeting point a normal car can usually reach the edge in dry conditions. A 4×4 is recommended for driving deeper onto soft sand, and safer after rain or wind. If you would rather not risk your car on a remote night track, an overnight safari with pickup is easier.
The Milky Way galactic core is best visible from February to October from UAE latitudes — this is when the core rises to a good height. The most comfortable camping conditions are October to April when nights are cool. The overlap — March–April and September–October — gives you both: comfortable temperatures and a well-positioned Milky Way. Always plan around a new-moon night — a bright moon washes out the stars almost completely.
About 10:30 pm to 3:30 am, once the sky is fully dark and the galactic core has risen. Arrive before sunset to set up, watch the sunset over the dunes, then let your eyes adjust for 20–30 minutes after dark before the stars are at their most spectacular.
Yes, wild camping is allowed, but there are no facilities at all — no toilets, no shops, no water and weak phone signal. Bring everything you need and take all rubbish home. For washrooms, hot food and a managed camp, an organised overnight desert safari is far more comfortable.
Yes — one of the best Milky Way photography spots in the UAE. Switch off all lights including headlights, use a tripod, and try a 15–25 second exposure at ISO 3200–6400 with a wide aperture. Even a smartphone in night mode can capture the galaxy on a new-moon night.
Safe but very remote. Signal can be weak and there are no emergency services nearby, so share your live location, travel with a full tank of fuel, carry extra water, and avoid soft sand at night unless you have a 4×4 and experience. Many first-timers prefer a guided overnight safari instead.
Al Quaa is a free public dark-sky area, not a tour we operate. We run overnight desert safaris with stargazing in the Al Khatim and Al Khaznah dunes, closer to the city, with a Bedouin-style camp, BBQ dinner, washrooms and a guide. The sky there is still beautifully dark, so you get the Milky Way experience with far more comfort.
No — Al Quaa is free, open desert land, not a ticketed attraction. Anyone with a vehicle can drive out and stargaze at no cost. What you are paying for on our overnight safari is the transport, the driver, the Bedouin-style camp, dinner and the Al Khatim location — not entry to Al Quaa itself, which we do not operate at.
Our Overnight Desert Safari is AED 450 and includes dune bashing, a Bedouin-style camp, BBQ dinner, stargazing and sunrise the next morning. If you simply want the desert and the sunset first, a standard safari starts from AED 40 self-drive. Choose your package and any extras in the builder on this page, then send one WhatsApp message and pay on arrival.
