The Experience

Where Al Khatim actually sits

Al Khatim Desert sits literally in the middle between Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, right along the E22 highway connecting the two cities — not a long detour from either direction, and often a shorter one from Al Ain than from Abu Dhabi city itself.

01

Real geology, not guesswork

Our dunes are scientifically surveyed linear (seif) dunes, not a vague “Arabian desert” description — verified facts about the exact terrain you will be driving across.

02

Sized for thrilling dune bashing

At 20 to 50 metres, our local dunes are tall enough for a genuinely exciting 4×4 climb, without needing the multi-hour trip a 300-metre Liwa mega-dune demands.

03

See the science for yourself

Climb a dune at sunset, watch the colour shift to deep amber, and feel the texture of sand that has been shaped by wind for tens of thousands of years.

The Complete Guide

Self-drive from Al Ain — the smart option

From AED 40 per person, drive yourself directly to the Al Khatim meeting point along the E22 — no detour into Abu Dhabi city required, and no pickup logistics to coordinate.

⭐ Desert safari from Al Ain, at a glance

If you are based in or visiting Al Ain, you are probably closer to a real desert safari than you think. The dune-bashing terrain almost every Abu Dhabi operator uses, including us, is the Al Khatim and Al Khaznah desert, which sits on the E22 highway roughly midway between Abu Dhabi and Al Ain — not a long detour from either city. This guide gives the honest distances, why self-drive is usually the smartest option from Al Ain, how pickup actually works for our pickup malls (which are in Abu Dhabi city), and how to pair the safari with Al Ain’s own attractions like Jebel Hafeet and the Oasis in a single day out.

📍 Where Al Khatim actually sits

Al Khatim Desert lies, in the words of its own geography, literally in the middle between Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, right along the E22 highway that connects the two cities. From Abu Dhabi city, it is roughly 80 km, about 45 minutes to an hour’s drive. From Al Ain, the distance is broadly comparable — some travellers report it being noticeably shorter, since Al Ain itself sits at the eastern end of the same E22 corridor. In practice, this means Al Ain-based guests are rarely worse off than Abu Dhabi-based ones, and are sometimes genuinely closer.

🏎️ Self-drive from Al Ain — the smart option

For most Al Ain-based guests, self-drive is the easiest and cheapest way to do this, from just AED 40 per person. You drive your own car along the well-maintained E22 directly to the marked meeting point at Al Khatim, where you join the safari already in progress — no need to first drive into Abu Dhabi city to reach a pickup mall and then come back out again, which would genuinely add time to your day. The meeting point itself is reachable by a standard car; you only need a 4×4 once the dune-bashing portion begins, and that vehicle and driver are provided as part of every package.

🚙 If you want pickup instead

Honesty matters here: our standard pickup points — Al Wahda Mall, Mazyad Mall and Safeer Mall Shabiya — are in Abu Dhabi city, not Al Ain. If you would prefer not to self-drive, message us on WhatsApp before booking and tell us you are coming from Al Ain; we will tell you plainly whether pickup is workable for your dates rather than promising something we cannot deliver. For many Al Ain guests, self-drive ends up being both the simpler and the cheaper choice anyway.

🏔️ Pair it with Jebel Hafeet or the Oasis

Since you are already out this way, it is worth building a full day around it. Jebel Hafeet, the UAE’s second-highest peak at around 1,240 metres, has a dramatic mountain road with sweeping desert views and is one of Al Ain’s signature sights. Al Ain Oasis, a UNESCO World Heritage falaj-irrigated palm grove in the city centre, offers a cooler, greener contrast to the dunes. A popular plan is Jebel Hafeet or the Oasis in the morning, then a sunset desert safari in the evening — or flip it around for a dawn safari followed by an afternoon in the city.

🧭 Getting there step by step

From Al Ain, head onto the E22 toward Abu Dhabi and watch for the Al Khatim turn-off, well before you would reach the city itself — it is straightforward to navigate by GPS using “Al Khatim Desert” as your destination. Arrive a little before your booked time, and your guide will meet you at the marked point to start the dune-bashing portion of the safari. From there, the experience runs exactly the same as for any other guest: the same camp, the same activities, the same sunset or sunrise, whichever package you choose.

🐶 Al Ain’s own desert wildlife park

If wildlife is part of why you are drawn to the desert, Al Ain Zoo is worth knowing about separately from the dune-bashing safari. It is home to Arabian and African species including the scimitar oryx, alongside rhinos, ostriches, zebras and gazelles — a different kind of desert experience to the dune safari, but a natural complement if you are spending more than a day in the area.

🌅 Morning or evening, from Al Ain

Both work well when you are starting from Al Ain. A morning safari suits an early start before spending the rest of the day at Jebel Hafeet or the Oasis; an evening safari suits spending the day in Al Ain first, then heading out for sunset, dune bashing, a BBQ dinner and the live camp shows. Neither route adds meaningful extra driving compared with the other — it comes down to how you want to structure your day.

💰 What it costs from Al Ain

Pricing from Al Ain is the same as anywhere else, since the safari itself runs from the same meeting point. Self-drive starts from AED 40 per person, sharing pickup from AED 60 (subject to the honest check above), and the popular evening safari with dune bashing, a camel ride, BBQ dinner and live shows is AED 250 per person. Every package is pay-on-arrival — no online payment, no deposit, just one WhatsApp message to confirm.

🏜️ Book your desert safari from Al Ain

Whether you self-drive in or want to check pickup feasibility, the booking process is the same one WhatsApp message either way. Choose your package and any extras in the builder below, send your inquiry, and we will confirm availability, the exact meeting point, and your final price — ready for a desert day that fits naturally around everything else Al Ain has to offer.

Why Abu Dhabi, not Dubai

If you want pickup instead

Our pickup malls (Al Wahda, Mazyad, Safeer Shabiya) are all in Abu Dhabi city. Message us on WhatsApp before booking if you are travelling from Al Ain and want pickup — we will confirm honestly whether it works for your dates.

Tyres are deflated before the dunes, the convoy stays together throughout, and every guest is belted in for the full ride — the same careful preparation behind every safari we run, whether it is your first dune-bashing session or your fifth.

The Abu Dhabi Desert

Landscape, heritage & wildlife

🏜️ The desert landscape

The Al Khatim and Al Khaznah desert opens up roughly midway between Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, its wide erg dunes endlessly reshaped by the seasonal shamal winds that sweep this stretch of the E22 corridor. Iron-oxide in the sand gives it that warm ochre cast, deepening to copper and amber at sunset. October through April is the season to come, with daytime temperatures of 22°C to 30°C and winter nights settling to a comfortable 15°C.

🏕️ Bedouin heritage

This stretch between Abu Dhabi and Al Ain was Bedouin country for generations — nomadic tribes who crossed it by camel, navigating by starlight long before either city existed in its modern form. The camp keeps that heritage alive with a welcome of qahwa, cardamom-spiced Arabic coffee, fresh dates and majlis-style seating. Henna art, Arabic costume photos, and live Tanoura and belly-dance shows connect the evening to genuine Emirati tradition.

🦅 Desert wildlife & the Empty Quarter

Between Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, protected desert corridors around Al Khatim shelter the Arabian oryx — the UAE’s national animal — alongside sand gazelles and migrating houbara bustards. Further south, the Liwa region and the Empty Quarter (Rub’ al Khali) hold the world’s tallest dunes, Moreeb Dune among them at around 300 metres. An optional falcon photography add-on lets guests pose with a trained bird, part of the UAE’s UNESCO-recognised falconry tradition.

Choose Your Light

Pair it with Jebel Hafeet or the Oasis

You are already out this way — here are the three easiest pairings to build a full Al Ain day around your desert safari.

Jebel Hafeet

UAE’s 2nd-highest peak

A dramatic mountain road climbs to around 1,240 metres, with sweeping desert views back toward the dunes you will be dune-bashing across later in the day.

Al Ain Oasis

UNESCO palm grove

A cool, green, falaj-irrigated oasis right in the city centre — a striking contrast to the open dunes, and an easy morning stop before an evening safari.

Al Ain Zoo

Arabian wildlife park

Home to the scimitar oryx alongside rhinos, ostriches, zebras and gazelles — a different kind of desert wildlife encounter to round out the day.

Good to know: A popular full-day plan: Jebel Hafeet or the Oasis in the morning, then a sunset desert safari with us in the evening — all without backtracking into Abu Dhabi city.

Desert Safari from Al Ain — FAQs

Not exactly. The dune-bashing terrain used for almost every desert safari in this part of the UAE is the Al Khatim and Al Khaznah desert, which sits on the E22 highway roughly midway between Abu Dhabi and Al Ain — not inside Al Ain city itself. If you are based in or visiting Al Ain, you are often closer to this desert than visitors coming from Abu Dhabi city are.

Al Khatim sits roughly midway along the E22 between the two cities, so the drive from Al Ain is broadly comparable to, and in some cases shorter than, the roughly 80 km drive from Abu Dhabi city. Exact distance depends on your starting point in Al Ain, but you are not looking at a long detour either way.

Our standard pickup points — Al Wahda Mall, Mazyad Mall and Safeer Mall Shabiya — are in Abu Dhabi city, not Al Ain. If you are staying in Al Ain, self-drive to the meeting point is usually the simplest option, since you are already close. If you specifically need pickup, message us on WhatsApp before booking and we will tell you honestly whether it is possible for your dates.

Self-drive is usually the smartest choice from Al Ain. You skip the detour of driving into Abu Dhabi city to reach a pickup mall and back out again, and instead head almost directly to the Al Khatim meeting point along the E22. It is also our lowest-priced option, from AED 40 per person.

Yes, many visitors do exactly this. Jebel Hafeet and Al Ain Oasis are both close to the city, and Al Khatim sits on the same E22 corridor you would already be travelling. A common plan is Jebel Hafeet or the Oasis in the morning, then a sunset desert safari in the evening, or the reverse for a sunrise safari.

Yes. The E22 between Al Ain and Abu Dhabi is a well-maintained main highway, and the meeting point is accessible by a standard car — you only need a genuine 4×4 once you leave the tarmac for the dunes themselves, which is handled by your driver on every package except fully self-guided off-roading.

Both work well from Al Ain. Morning suits an early start before exploring Jebel Hafeet or the Oasis later in the day; evening suits visitors who want to spend the day in Al Ain first, then head to the dunes for sunset, dinner and the live camp shows.

Self-drive starts from AED 40 per person, with sharing pickup from AED 60 and a private car from AED 700 (up to 6 people) — though pickup is based from Abu Dhabi malls, so confirm feasibility from Al Ain first. The popular evening safari with dune bashing, a camel ride, BBQ dinner and live shows is AED 250 per person, pay on arrival.

No. The drive along the E22 and to the marked meeting point is on a regular sealed road, accessible by any standard car. You only transfer into a desert-prepared 4×4 once the dune-bashing portion of the safari begins, driven by our experienced guide.

Al Ain itself is worth a full day on its own — Jebel Hafeet, the UAE’s second-highest peak with a dramatic mountain road; Al Ain Oasis, a UNESCO World Heritage falaj-irrigated palm grove; and Al Ain Zoo, home to Arabian wildlife including the scimitar oryx. All sit comfortably alongside a desert safari in the same trip.
